Ultimate Game Guide: Boomers and Flyers set for top of the table blockbuster

January 8, 2020 | Melbourne Boomers news

In a highly anticipated clash this Sunday, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers will be out to knock the Southside Flyers off top spot on the WNBL ladder, in the final outing against their local rivals before the Finals series commence.

This is the third game between these teams this season, which sees them play for the Michelle Timms Cup.

Southside defeated the Boomers in hard-fought contests in the previous encounters this season, which will leave the home side fired up for Sunday’s game.

Boomers star point guard Lindsay Allen says the Flyers should expect a fierce reception at the State Basketball Centre.

“We’re excited for another game with Southside, and we hope our fans turn out in force to help get us over the line, ” she said.

A win against Adelaide on Friday night will see the Boomers poised to take top spot off Southside on Sunday, so you won’t want to miss out on this one!

Boomer Updates

The Boomers could land the number one spot on the ladder if they can go 2-0 this weekend against the Adelaide Lightning and Southside Flyers, virtually securing them a spot in the Semi Finals.

The Boomers defence continues to be the best in league, leading the stats in steals with 143 and blocks with 61.

Keep a watchful eye out for…

Maddie Garrick has been playing like a champion. The Co-Captain top scored for the Boomers against Sydney with19 points to go along with seven rebounds and five assists. Garrick is one of the top three shooters from beyond the arc this season and has made 33 three-pointers this season.

Ezi Magbegor put in a strong performance against the Flames, coming close to making her second double-double of the season. Magbegor finished up with nine points and 10 rebounds. She’ll be looking for a good game against her US opponent, Mercedes Russell.

Southside Flyers Intel

Although sitting pretty on top of the WNBL ladder with 13 wins, the Flyers were defeated convincingly by Adelaide Lightning in round 12.

They boast one of the highest scoring percentages in the league, with 46% from the field and 37% from beyond the arc.

Better look out for…

Mercedes Russell has been outstanding for the Flyers this season. Despite the loss to Adelaide Russell had a double-double with a team high 28 points, 10 rebounds and 3 steals. She’ll again be looking to assert herself in the paint against Magbegor and George.

Sara Blicavs is having one of her best WNBL seasons to date. Her last outing she had 18 points and seven rebounds, and is likely to prove a handful for the Boomers defenders.
