The Deakin Melbourne Boomers Will Continue to be a Purpose-Led Organisation

June 19, 2024 | Melbourne Boomers news

The Boomers have been a cornerstone of women’s professional basketball in Australia over the past 40 years.  In the past 8 years our commitment extended into the community through initiatives like Mamma Ball and the Deakin Melbourne Boomers Academy, supported by Mirvac. As we congratulate Geelong on their newly transferred WNBL license, the Boomers will continue to foster empowerment and growth in women’s basketball through our community programs.

This is why the Deakin Melbourne Boomers will continue their mission to ‘make a difference for women and girls through basketball’ via our community programs. Mamma Ball and the Deakin Melbourne Boomers Academy, supported by Mirvac, will continue to run at Parkville and Knox through Term 3 and 4.

One of the most impactful community programs initiated by the Deakin Melbourne Boomers is Mamma Ball. This program is specifically designed to engage women, those who identity as a women, and non-binary people who are more comfortable in a female environment to participate in basketball. Mamma Ball provides a supportive environment where women of all skill levels can enjoy the game, build friendships, and enhance their well-being.

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers Academy is another testament to the Boomers’ commitment to community basketball. Young basketball enthusiasts are connected with and coached by WNBL athletes, providing them with the skills, knowledge and support needed to excel in the sport. A new program ‘Empowered’ has been introduced in July, focusing on young female athletes, equipping them with the confidence and tools they need to build resilience and leadership.

Hence the Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ journey of empowerment and community building through basketball will continue. As well as excitingly, a new partnership will be announced later this month where we will contribute to one of the latest health campaigns in Victoria.
