State treasurer unveils upgraded State Basketball Centre changing rooms

Victorian State Treasurer, The Honourable Tim Pallas, hosted a ceremony on Sunday to mark the completion of $50,000 upgrade works to the changing rooms at the State Basketball Centre, ahead of a huge Melbourne derby clash as the Deakin Melbourne Boomers hosted the Southside Flyers.

Jackson Taylor the State Member for the Bayswater District said,

“It was great to be able to have the Treasurer Tim Pallas down to help officially open the new change rooms – am so proud to have been able to secure $50,000 to help see them come to fruition.”

“I’ve been a long time passionate supporter of the Boomers and so backing them in with this funding was the least we could do.” Taylor said.

Boomers General Manager, Christy Collier says the investment from the State Government is just the start what is needed to provide facilities for women’s sport that’s befitting of the athletes and teams.

“The upgrade is an investment in the future for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and sport in the state, and we’re grateful for the Government’s ongoing commitment to basketball in Victoria “, she said.

The upgrade comes in addition to an $82million commitment last year by the State Government to redevelop the State Basketball Centre.

The Boomers signed an agreement with Knox City Council in 2018.

“The future is bright for the club,” added Collier.

“We had the highest average home game attendance last season, and crowds have been strong once again this season.

“Our membership broke the 3000-mark last year and we’re now seeing regular live broadcasts by Fox and live streaming services on Kayo.

“With significant redevelopment set for the State Basketball Centre, we’re excited to enter a period of growth for the club both on and off the court.”

The Boomers were beaten by the Flyers 75-73 in an overtime thriller but remain in the driving seat to land home advantage for the Finals.
