GAME PREVIEW: BOOMERS TO TAKE ON BENDIGO SPIRIT IN THEIR OPENING GAME OF WNBL 21/22

December 7, 2021 | Melbourne Boomers news

Two Victorian teams will go head-to-head in the start of the second round of the WNBL, as the Deakin Melbourne Boomers play their first game of the season against the Villawood Bendigo Spirit.

The match will also see long time Boomer, Maddie Garrick, suiting up for the Spirit against her former team.

The Boomers have retained the core of their experienced group, including Australian Opals and Olympians, Cayla George, Ezi Magbegor and Tess Madgen, New Zealand Tall Fern, Penina Davidson, Rachel Brewster, Izzy Wright, as well as returning import, Lindsay Allen.

This core group will only be further bolstered by star recruit – and Allen’s fellow Indiana Fever (WNBA) teammate – Tiffany Mitchell, plus young guns, including, Lily Scanlon and Lou Brown.

The Bendigo Spirit went down 94 to 83 against the Southside Flyers in their season opener last weekend, so will be looking to get on the board against the Boomers.

Coming heartbreakingly close to championship for the past few seasons, the Boomers are hungry for success – especially as it’s head coach, Guy Molloy’s, last season at the club after 9 years.

Unlike the Boomers who have contested the past four finals series, the Spirit however went winless last season in Far North Queensland. Head coach, Tracy York, is coming back of an ambitious and successful recruitment drive over the off-season with the likes of Leilani Mitchell, past Boomers’ co-captain Maddie Garrick, and Anneli Maley, joining their ranks.

The Boomers will be looking for a win to kick start their momentum as they head into their first home game of the season on Saturday, against the Southside Flyers. The first hit-out in front of a home crowd in over 20 months but what has felt like a lifetime!
