POST-GAME REPORT NOVEMBER 26 V UC CAPITALS
A pulverising performance from Melbourne’s monster-in-the-middle Naz Hillmon spoiled young Opals’ star Jade Melbourne’s regional Victorian homecoming as the Boomers kept their undefeated start to the WNBL season alive against the Canberra Capitals.
The Gippsland Regional Indoor Sports Stadium (GRISS) was lit up by Boomers fans who made the journey to watch the starting five square up against the Capitals dominant lineup.
Traralgon local Jade Melbourne from the UC Capitals managed to back her performance from Round 3, dropping 24 points and 7 assists, doing her best to defend against the Boomers’ strength.
Melbourne came out swinging in the first half of the game, heavily defending the key and making it rain buckets for the Capitals.
However, the Boomers were led by Sara Blicavs and Keely Froling who challenged the Capital’s defence and respectively scored 7 and 17 points apiece, both of whom are topping the Boomers leaderboard in average points, assists and rebounds.
Froling secured a double-double for the game, claiming over 10 points and 10 rebounds and led the charge against the Capitals, eventually fouling out in overtime.
WNBA star Naz Hillmon showed up on fire today and put her body on the line, managing to keep with Melbourne and Alexandra Fowler who were pure power on the court.
WNBL MVP frontrunner Jordin Canada came out in full force, scoring 16 points and maintained running down the ball, utilising her experience and high IQ on court.
UC Capitals put up a good fight with their defensive players Alex Sharp and Gemma Potter who used their physicality to make the Round 4 game a tight battle.
The gameplay was all tied up at 76-76, forcing the two teams into a quick and competitive overtime with Jade Melbourne being fouled in the last minute and then receiving a technical foul on the bench.
Melbourne Boomers ultimately secured the win down in Traralgon, 87-81, after a gruelling game against the UC Capitals.
The game has left the Melbourne Boomers 5-0 and remain the only undefeated WNBL team this season, proving that this team is a force to be reckoned with.
