Sunday afternoon’s loss against the Southside Flyers was an upset to the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and their current finals trajectory.

The Flyers took out the win against the Boomers after an intense and physical game at the Boom Box, Parkville with the Flyers clinching the win 82-84.

The inaugural Pride Game saw the Flyers take control of the scoreboard for most of the game, with the Boomers slightly trailing at the end of each quarter.

Flyers star and hopeful Opal Lauren Jackson had an amazing 200th WNBL game amassing 20 points and 5 rebounds, showcasing her talents at the Boom Box.

The fourth kicked off a short lived redemption arc for the Boomers with Jordin Canada leading the team and playing catch up with the Flyers.

An amazing 3 point jump shot by Canada brought the Boomers up 71-72 with five minutes to go, making for an exhilarating final quarter.

The US free agent and WNBL superstar had an rejuvenated game, racking up 21 points, 3 boards and 8 assists and doing her best to narrow the margin between the two Melbourne teams.

The final minute was a display of tenacity and strength from the Boomers, doing their best to close the gap with Canada scoring a 2 point layup, scoreboard at 80-81 with 50 seconds on the clock.

Sara Blicavs did her best to put the Boomers over the line with two open 3 point shots in the final seconds to win the game for the Boomers, but she was unable to connect with the Flyers two-points up when the game ended.

The matchup was an incredible feat and displayed the amazing talents of both the Melbourne Boomers and the Southside Flyers.

On a positive note, Meg McKay made her debut with the team and got her first minutes as a Boomer donning the purple and yellow.

The Boom Box also had a sell out for the first time this season, with Boomers’ fans embracing the Pride spirit and showing up in their best rainbow fashions.

The Melbourne Boomers now sit third with only a single loss separating the 2nd, 3rd and 4th teams, making the next game against the Perth Lynx critical to win in order to maintain their Top 4 position.

The Melbourne Boomers will now host their final Home Game of the 2023/24 WNBL season on Wednesday, January 24 at 7pm against the Perth Lynx at the Boom Box, Parkville!
