POST-GAME REPORT DECEMBER 3 V PERTH LYNX
Today marked the first loss for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers for the WNBL Cygnett 2023-24 season. It was an incredibly tough game against the Perth Lynx back in the Boom Box after last week’s Traralgon game.
The Boomers’ starting five, Tera Reed, Jordin Canada, Sara Blicavs, Naz Hillmon and Keely Froling had a strong start with Blicavs making an incredible 3 pointer in the first 15 seconds of the game.
Aimie Rocci copped an unsportsmanlike foul in the last two minutes of the first, leading to a quick substitution putting Monique Conti on the court, her first minutes as a Boomer after winning the 2023 AFLW Best and Fairest Award.
Canada, Hillmon and Blicavs scored some excellent buckets in the first quarter but the Lynx were heavy on our trail, ending the quarter all tied up with 19-19.
Lynx came out hard on defence in the second quarter, blocking many attempted shots from the Boomers.
The Perth stars Aari McDonald, Emily Potter and Miela Goodchild were key scorers for the Lynx this quarter, their efforts put the Lynx up at half time 28-42.
The Boomers started off the third quarter strong, driving the ball down to the key. Jordin Canada was the reigning bucket queen, scoring 11 points in the third quarter, assisted by Sara Blicavs and Keely Froling who scored 5 and 6 points respectively.
Perth continued to give the Boomers a good fight, heavily defending the key with McDonald and Amy Atwell scoring well and maintaining offensive rebounds.
Both teams did miss many shots, the Boomers and Perth both averaged a 34% shooting accuracy for the game.
Anneli Maley was an epic defender and rebounder, with 17 rebounds for the entire game.
The Boomers did their best to even up the scores and worked their way up to finish the third quarter, 53-56.
It was looking hopeful for the Boomers entering the fourth but the win quickly slipped away.
The Boomers missed 17/23 shots, letting go of many chances to get in front of the Lynx and get control of the game.
Hillmon, Froling and Blicavs all received four personal fouls for the game, with Conti, Reed and Davidson all receiving two.
Lynx were unstoppable with McDonald and Maley scoring the majority of the fourth quarter points and consistently driving the ball into the key.
Perth ultimately clinched the win against the Melbourne Boomers, finishing the game at 63-80.
