Opals Grab Silver Against Tough USA, Boomers Quartet Set For WNBL Season
The Chemist Warehouse Opals have secured the Silver Medal at the FIBA World Cup following a tough 56-73 loss to the United States.
A 26-11 third quarter by the world’s best team proved pivotal as the Opals worked hard to fight back after a slow start. In particular, the Australians found the going tough from beyond the arc where only 18% of shots connected.
All four Deakin Melbourne Boomers players saw action with Ezi Magbegor (6pts, 4rbs) providing a spark, Captain Jenna O’Hea (6pts, 4ast) showing her customary determination, with Cayla George and Steph Talbot taking on tough defensive assignments.
The Boomers quartet are due back in Melbourne later this week.
2017/18 Boomers MVP Liz Cambage was named in the World Cup All-Star 5.
With less than two weeks until the Home Opener of season 2018/19, the Boomers play one last pre-season game this Friday (Oct 5) against Dandenong at the State Basketball Centre (7pm).
All full-season members receive free entry. For non-members tickets are available at the door.
