Melbourne Slips Up Against Sydney

A slow start by the Deakin Melbourne Boomers proved costly on Friday night in Sydney, the home team eventually running out 65-56 winners.
With just 9pts to show from the opening 10 minutes, the Boomers trailed by 12pts and were searching for answers, especially on the glass where the Flames took a 14-5 advantage in the first quarter.
The rebound advantage continued for the Flames throughout the game, providing them with a decisive edge in an anticipated clash.
A tough second quarter saw scoring hard to come by for both teams, the Boomers shooting at a lowly sub-20% clip until two crucial basketball just before the main break breathed life into the visitors.
Down by 11pts at the start of the third period, Liz Cambage (19pts) started to get the Boomers rolling along with young Monique Conti who was applying pressure on the Flames at both ends of the floor.
The Boomers reduced the margin to 4pts on two occasions during a hectic second half, but unfortunately they could never quite pip the Flames with Asia Taylor (27pts) seemingly coming up with all the answers when most needed.
Melbourne now continues to head north for a crucial clash with Townsville on Sunday afternoon.
