Melbourne Grab Important Win In Sydney

October 22, 2018 | Melbourne Boomers news

THE DEAKIN MELBOURNE BOOMERS have won their first game of the 2018/19 Chemist Warehouse WNBL season in an intense comeback, claiming a 87-75  victory over the Sydney Uni Flames.

In front of a vocal Sydney crowd at Brydens Stadium, who were there celebrating the club’s 15th anniversary at the venue, the Boomers started the game slowly with costly turnovers and many missed scoring opportunities.

Meanwhile, the Flames dominated early, scoring the first 13 points of the game before Steph Talbot broke the drought for the Boomers.

Down 14-27, the second quarter proved to be a huge turnaround for the Boomers when they came out significantly stronger from the get-go, producing better ball movements with Linday Allen leading the charge with an outstanding 11-point quarter.

Running with the momentum, the Boomers took their first lead of the game on the back of a Maddie Garrick three-pointer with just over 2 minutes left before half time.

The third period proved mostly even, the Boomers holding a one-point going into the final quarter. In the fourth, the Flames kept at the Boomers and managed to grab the lead back early on, however the visitors stood their ground and managed to push the game beyond reach over the final five minutes.

In the end, the Boomers were too hot for the Flames and claimed an 87-75 victory.

Allen finished the game with 23 points, Cayla George (9pts, 9reb and 10ast) and Jenna O’Hea (19 points) played well, while Sarah Boothe and Maddie Garrick made valuable contributions as well.

The Boomers now fly to Canberra to take on the UC Capitals this Friday (October 26).
