Melbourne Boomers Indigenous Round

November 28, 2023 | Melbourne Boomers news

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are honoured to be hosting our Indigenous Round this week with our game on Sunday, December 3 at 3pm.

We will also be hosting a training session at the Boom Box with Indigenous Basketball Australia where 50 children will be attending and get to interact with the Boomers players.

These children will also receive a special t-shirt that was born of a collaboration with the Boomers players and artist Melinda Kennedy. Melinda is the also the designer and original creator of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ Indigenous jersey that the players will be wearing on Sunday.

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers’ Indigenous jersey was created with the aim to celebrate and recognise Indigenous Australians and culture both within the WNBL and the wider Australian community.

The specially designed jersey helps bring to life the appreciation of Indigenous culture that Deakin continues to champion through their collaboration with the Melbourne Boomers.

The jersey is named the “Moodoogorok”, after an artwork that was designed by Melinda Kennedy. “Moodoogorok” means to be a leader and a wise woman. Melinda said she “thought of a team and how in culture it is so important” to see strong female leaders in the community.

The depicted items on the jersey are the “mookitj” (the kangaroo apple) and “kurrarra” (the dilly bag) represent the strengths and knowledge gained by women through their life experiences over time.

The children brought in by Indigenous Basketball Australia will also play an on-court game at half time on Game Day.

Wurundjeri elder Alex Kerr will be doing the Welcome to Country on Game Day and there will also be didgeridoo playing pregame.

It will be a fantastic game with the Melbourne Boomers donning their Indigenous jersey and will be a great matchup against the Perth Lynx at the Boom Box. Click here for tickets!
