Keely Froling on her first Boomers season and finals
Keely Froling is no stranger to WNBL Finals. She has played over 200 games in the league for three different teams and has two WNBL Championships under her belt.
Froling was a fresh face for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers this season, joining an almost entirely new squad which for her has been “really exciting” and different to her previous seasons in the WNBL.
“The main difference is playing in a club that is loaded with talent which is what I wanted.”
WNBL MVP Jordin Canada and Naz Hillmon joined Froling as newbies to the Boomers and who Keely has “loved playing with”.
“Jordin, she’s just a phenomenal point guard, passer, scorer, defender, she does it all and it’s been really great to play with her as a big.”
“Naz, my big sister, I just love watching her footwork around the post, she’s just so talented.”
“I’m just glad they’re on our team and I am excited to see where their careers go.”
Selected back in November as co-captain of the team with Kristy Wallace, Froling was “really honoured” to be nominated and then chosen by her fellow peers to represent the team.
“I’ve always been a leader in the way I’ve gone about my game, I’m not a super vocal leader and try to lead by example.”
Froling works closely with Head Coach Chris Lucas and Assistant Coach Kristi Harrower in trainings and “love[s] their approach and style” to mentoring and leading the players to success.
“With Kristi, I just love how direct she is and how blunt she is, and Chris obviously just has so much passion.”
Keely will be donning the purple and yellow for her first time playing in the 2023/24 CYGNETT WNBL Finals, professing that she “love[s] finals time” and notes “there’s a bit more excitement” this time of year.
However, Froling doesn’t let this intense time period get to her, stating “it’s the same as any other game” and her prep will stay the same and she’ll “hopefully get a nap in”.
“There’s not too much change for me personally, you don’t want to be too high or too low coming into these games.”
The Boomers walk into their first game of the 2023/24 CYGNETT WNBL Finals tonight against the Southside Flyers and Keely notes that the team is “going in with a lot of confidence” that they can get the job done.
“We know them well and I think we match up with them really well.”
“We’ve gone through everything now, it’s just about playing our brand of basketball, and I think defence is going to win us this series.”
