GRILL’D POST-GAME REPORT ROUND 2

The first home game of the season was an event not to be missed, with fans showing up in large numbers as the Deakin Melbourne Boomers prevailed over the Adelaide Lightning, 85-81.

The Play-by-Play

All eyes were on the Boomers to secure the win on their home court, which motivated Kristy Wallace and Tiffany Mitchell to use their impressive ball-handling skills and flair in the first quarter. Mia Murray was fired up, giving the Boomers a slight lead in the first. Cayla George showcased her strength in defence, and Lily Camody secured her first points in the WNBL. It was the Lightning’s Steph Talbot who paved the way for a comeback, and Adelaide went into the first break up 27-25.

The second quarter started off strong for the Boomers, as Murray hit an early three, erasing the Lightning’s lead. The Boomers maintained their aggressive defence as Mitchell heated up, as did Paige Burrows who made her mark with four assists. George stayed aggressive on the boards throughout the quarter and also landed a three, which secured the lead at halftime, 45-41.

The Boomers maintained their momentum during the third, and made headway with George and Olivia Nelson-Ododa landing baskets. Penina Davidson channelled her aggression to secure a slight lead, which Mitchell and George took advantage of to lock in a nail biting one point lead at three-quarter time, 63-62.

With the Lightning poised to mount a comeback, Burrows upped the ante by hitting a three, and Wallace used her speed to drive the ball and score at the rim. Nelson-Ododa contributed with key rebounds, but it was the Big Three of George, Mitchell and Wallace who came up big down the stretch and helped hold off a late comeback by the Lightning, with the Boomers ultimately winning 85-81.

Star Performers

Boomers forward Mia Murray was the Player of the Game, with 16 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists.

Some honourable mentions go to Tiffany Michell who also had an amazing performance with 23 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists. And Cayla George, with 16 points, 11 rebounds and 5 assists.
