Deakin Melbourne Boomers excited to reconnect with Bulleen history in new Heritage Program
Over the past 36-years of the Boomers, 194 players have represented the Club in the WNBL. From the Bulleen Boomers, established in 1984, to the current Deakin Melbourne Boomers, this upcoming season, we want to celebrate our history and to do so we are proud to introduce the Boomers Heritage Program.
The Boomers Heritage Program aims to recognize and commemorate our past, with a strong focus on previous players. The Boomers have had many outstanding players since ’84, including the likes of Linda Brandt, Sharin Milner, Larissa Anderson, Allison Tranquilli (nee Cook), Michelle Timms, Hollie Florance (nee Grima), Liz Cambage, Gaylene McKay and Debbie Slimmon, and we thought it was about time we reflected on the contribution and success of these athletes and the many others who contributed to this great Club.
The Boomers have had 194 players throughout the Club’s history, and that number is only going to continue growing as young girls all over Australia pick up their basketballs with the dream of playing professionally. We are proud that so many of our past and current players are role models to young girls, inspiring them to play sports and work hard with the desire to play at elite levels.
The Boomers Heritage Program is excited to begin our campaign with Boomers icon, Debbie Slimmon. Slimmon had seven career years playing for the Boomers from 1989 to 1996. During her career had a huge impact on the Club’s history. Slimmon won the WNBL MVP Award twice, in 1990 and 1992 and in 2015 was inducted into Basketball Victoria’s Hall of Fame.
We as a Club are excited to share her Boomers story as well as others throughout the season through video productions created by Basil Gerald and articles written by leading basketball writer and The Age Sports Journalist, Roy Ward.
We’re also excited to be hosting a VIP Function event for our Past Players of the Club at our home game on November 30th against Sydney Uni Flames who are coached by Boomers great Katrina Hibbert.
“The Boomers Club is the longest running professional women’s sporting team in Australia – in any sport”, stated Chair, Tony Hallam. “We want to recognize and celebrate those who have been part of this historic organization, who have laid the foundation for the professional team that it is today.”
