Deakin Melbourne Boomers continue building stability with Stella Beck

Maintaining the club’s key focus on continuity this season, the Deakin Melbourne Boomers welcome back New Zealand Tall Fern, Stella Beck.

The number of returning Boomers in the fast-filling roster isn’t lost on the players either, with Beck stating the team itself is what she is most looking forward to in coming back to the Boomers this season.

“It is so awesome that we have so many of the girls coming back this year. We had a lot of fun together last season.”

As we move toward the season ahead, for Beck this helps build an added sense of optimism in taking home a championship.

“(I’m) feeling confident, we were right there last year.”

Knowing that the team had every chance of ending on top last year, Beck acknowledges there are always parts of the game you can never work on enough.

“Three-point shooting is something we work on constantly and we are always trying to build on that.”

“And, finishing off those close games, we missed some crucial opportunities last year, which we will look to build on too.”

After playing College ball for Saint Mary’s for four years, Beck began her WNBL career back in the 2018/19 season with the Townsville Fire, before moving to Melbourne to play with the Boomers in 2019.

Coming into her second season with the club, Beck admits there are still personal goals to work on as she continues to transition into what is a newer role in her amazing career so far.

“Transitioning to more of a permanent point guard role is still new for me, so I am often finding new challenges to overcome.”

Making her debut for the Tall Ferns back in 2013, Beck has since help win the William Jones Cup (an international basketball tournament organised by the Chinese Taipei Basketball Association) in 2018, and has represented her country in the 2019 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament, in Auckland, plus turning her hand to 3×3 in the 2019 FIBA Asia Cup.

Beck has enjoyed having the opportunity to spend some quality time back home in the off season.

“I have really enjoyed being home in New Zealand, and although I have missed sport, I have enjoyed new ways of keeping fit that don’t always include basketball.”

Personally, we can’t wait to have Stella back here in Melbourne to take on the season.
