Connecting With Grassroots Takes Boomers To Meet Some Cobras

The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are renowned for connecting with grassroots clubs across their home city and this week Maddie Garrick decided to reward a team of U12 girls for staying positive through a tough season of junior basketball.
The Kilsyth Cobras 12.3 team stepped off court after their last training session of the season, hoping they had put in the work to earn them a win following 17 successive losses. Waiting for them was star Boomers guard Maddie Garrick and club GM Justin Nelson.
"We wanted to to reward the girls for sticking at it, for loving the game and working hard no matter what the results had been," said Garrick, adding "So we turned up and gave each player a season membership to come along and see their WNBL in action."
Surrounded by their parents and the team's coaches, the 10 girls were thrilled to receive their memberships and also took the chance to have photos with Maddie as they swamped her for autographs.
"This is a really fun part of the work we do at the Boomers, we love getting out in the community and meeting the juniors and their families," explained Nelson.
"We are very fortunate to have so many grassroots clubs and associations getting behind us and supporting Melbourne's WNBL team. We saw that these girls had done some real hard yards this season, so we wanted to reward them for staying committed and enthusiastic."
