COACH MOLLOY HEADING TO NZ AT END OF WNBL 21/22
Deakin Melbourne Boomers announced today that Head Coach Guy Molloy will be heading permanently to New Zealand at the end of WNBL 21/22.
After nine memorable seasons with the Boomers, Molloy has decided to take up further opportunities with Basketball New Zealand including leading and extending the Tall Ferns program on the ground. He will also be taking up a Head Coach role which will be announced next week.
Molloy has been instrumental in building the Club into the force it is today, leading them to four consecutive finals series and a Grand Final appearance in 17/18.
He has been influential in the growth and development of the Boomers Coaching and High-Performance program, leading a significant increase in professionalism both at the Boomers and by setting standards across the WNBL.
He has attracted and retained extraordinary talent to the Club, including Ezi Magbegor, Cayla George, Lindsay Allen, and Tess Madgen.
Club Chairman Tony Hallam has nothing but praise to add: “Guy is not only a terrific Coach, but also a terrific person. We are sad to see him leave; however, we respect and support his decision, and wish him well in his new ventures. He will always be a key part of our Boomers history.”
In sharing her thoughts, Boomers Captain Cayla George said, “Guy has been a huge influence in my life, and so many players within our Club, on the court but more importantly off it as well. My respect and love for him will always remain. Although the news was initially a challenge to hear, I am extremely excited for the chapter Guy is embarking on in the near future. However, we still have a job to do here, and nothing changes that.”
Commenting on his departure at the conclusion of the upcoming season, Guy said: “The hardest decision I’ve ever had to make in my career is to leave this club. The Boomers has been a part of me and my family for the last nine years, and I’ve absolutely loved it. The club is in strong position now, and whoever comes in to take the reins has an amazing team and organisation to work with.
I’m excited to take on my new roles in New Zealand, but the Boomers will always be special to me, not only for the basketball, but for the great friendships that have been forged along the way. I’ll remember my time with great fondness.”
With WNBL 21/22 about to get underway, the Club will commence the recruitment process early in the New Year.
