Charity Partnership With Helping Hoops Announced
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are excited to announce a new partnership with local charity Helping Hoops for the 2023-24 season. Helping Hoops’ mission is to use basketball to inspire, empower and support children and young people. They achieve this through providing free community-based programs that instill values and skills that benefit participants in their everyday lives.
The Boomers recognise the vital role which basketball, and organised sport, play in the lives of children and young people, but also acknowledge that access to basketball is not equitable for all. Cost, transport and social barriers still exist for many, and these are the exact barriers which Helping Hoops breaks down to ensure children and young people have the ability to play, connect, learn and grow in a safe and community-focused environment.
Helping Hoops Executive Director, Teuila Reid, says of the partnership,
“Being able to partner with a club that amplifies the voices of athletes leading the way through the WNBL is so exciting AND as huge fans of women’s basketball we are excited about providing opportunities and experiences for young aspiring athletes to be what they can see.”
Boomers Chair, Tony Hallam, adds,
“The Deakin Melbourne Boomers see our partnership with Helping Hoops as an opportunity to contribute to our local community in line with our purpose – to make a difference for women through basketball.”
The Boomers will support Helping Hoops through a number of initiatives this season, including raising money at the upcoming Ikon 3×3 Corporate Cup, giving Helping Hoops participants ongoing opportunities to access our Boomers Academy, providing our members with the option to donate as part of their membership, and a special Helping Hoops themed home game with details to come.
Reid also shares,
We hope this partnership can provide tangible opportunities and experiences for young people through exposure and proximity to the best that sport has to offer to culturally and linguistically diverse children and young people. As an organisation that is independent, we rely heavily on the network of values aligned partners and volunteers to help us continue providing free social outcomes focused programs. We hope that our partnership can help us keep going, strengthened by our combined networks.”
