The Deakin Melbourne Boomers are excited to celebrate the news of Cayla George’s signing with the Las Vegas Aces of the Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA). George, 33, will join a star-studded Aces – the defending WNBA Champions – which already features Candice Parker, A’ja Wilson, Kelsey Plum, Chelsea Gray, and Jackie Young who spent the 2021-22 season playing against her as a member of the Perth Lynx.
Las Vegas were one of several WNBA clubs looking to add George to their roster after her outstanding performance at last year’s FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup, where she won bronze as a key member of the team.
“The Aces liked what I was about at the World Cup on and off the court, they liked what I brought culturally to a group,” George said.
“Their first question was ‘is this something you even want to do’ and they said ‘here’s what we see for you.
“I’d never been approached like that by a team from the WNBA.
“I’m so overwhelmed with excitement for it and the opportunity to play on a super team and have a chance to win a WNBA championship.”
This is a return to the WNBA for George, having spent time in Phoenix and Dallas from 2015 to 2018. She, along with husband Kailou and baby Pearl, will head to the US following the completion of the WNBL season in March.
We are incredible happy for, and proud of, Cayla and look forward to seeing her apply her craft at the highest level yet again.
Congratulations Cayla.
