Busy End To Season For Boomers

February 9, 2017 | Melbourne Boomers news
Three games in eight days will keep the Deakin Melbourne Boomers busy as they close out a season that will see them miss the playoffs. After playing in Adelaide tonight the Boomers will continue to head west for a showdown with Perth on Sunday, before catching the red-eye home to immediately begin preparations for a home game against Bendigo on Saturday February 18. While the season hasn't reaped full rewards on the court, the success of the Boomers off the court cannot be underestimated with crowds up 47 per cent and community engagement at an all-time high. "It's been a big year and a really successful one in so many ways," said Boomers GM Justin Nelson. "While we'd love to be amongst the playoffs we are very mindful that in June last year we didn't know if we would still be here, so when you factor in a late start in our preparations it's fair to say we have ticked plenty of boxes." Despite the successful growth off the court, the importance of taking the next steps on the court aren't lost on Nelson. "We've just turned 33 and we've arguably just gone through the biggest and in some respects the toughest year in the history of the club. The support from our commercial partners, members and the basketball community has been amazing," explained Nelson. "Our appreciation for our supporters is sky high, they have played a huge part in helping us get back on our feet. Now we're fully focused on taking some big steps forward." The Boomers announced earlier this week they will dedicate the last home game of each regular season to past players in another move to ensure the iconic history of the club remains front and centre. "So many people have played an important part in this club's history. We're really excited about the future and we want to make sure every person connected to the Boomers across more than three decades continues with us on that journey," added Nelson.
