Boomers representing at FIBA Asia Cup

Members of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers are heading off this week to Bangalore, India to compete in the Asia Cup at the Sree Kanteeraua Indoor Stadium from the 24th to the 29th of September.

This international basketball tournament is contested between women’s national teams of Asia and Oceania. With a total of eight teams including Australia, New Zealand, China, Philippines, Korea, Chines Taipei, Japan and India competing.

Cayla George and Ezi Magbegor will be joining the Australian Opals, creating talent and experience with three Olympic medals and twelve world cup medals spread throughout the team.

Opals Schedule:

Tuesday 24th of September                – Opals vs Philippines

Wednesday 25th of September          – Opals vs New Zealand

Thursday 26th of September              – Opals vs China

Friday 27th of September                    – Quarter finals

Saturday 28th of September               – Semi-finals

Sunday 29th of September                  – Finals

In 2017 the Opals were defeated 73-74 in a nail biting FIBA Asia Cup finals against Japan. This year they will be out to redeem themselves and will be striving to walk away with the gold medal.

The New Zealand national team, The Tall Ferns, includes Boomers athletes Toni Farnworth, Penina Davidson, Stella Beck, and Kalani Purcell and will be coached by our very own Guy Molloy.

Following the result of the FIBA Women’s Asia Cup the eight teams in Division A will get a spot to play at the FIBA Olympics pre-qualifying tournament where the top two teams will qualify for a chance to play at the upcoming Olympic Games in Tokyo, Japan.
