Boomers heat up at Knox Festival

April 10, 2019 | Melbourne Boomers news

Last month, over 12,000 people attended the annual Knox Festival – an amazing turn out for a fun filled weekend.

As part of our Community Engagement Partnership with the Knox City Council, the Knox Festival saw Deakin Melbourne Boomers out in force facilitating a half court activation with the local juniors.  Boomers’ players participating in Knox City Council community activities work to support the Council’s goal of promoting healthy living and well being across the community and encourages the participation of females in basketball and sport in general.

Maddie Garrick, Ezi Magbegor, and local Knox junior and Boomers Development player, Leah Santomaggio did us proud working with the Knox community juniors on the finer points of basketball.

The heat didn’t deter the youngsters from getting amongst the 3 on 3 games, dribbling practice, and 3-point shoot outs with some coaching from a few of the Boomers stars. It was a great opportunity for locals to meet some of the team and receive one on one guidance from professional players.

Ed Cowlishaw, our celebrity Deakin Live commentator, rallied the community on court, while Steph Phillips and Stuart Donnelly from Deakin University helped out representing the Boomers.

The community festival has been around for 30 years, offering a diverse range of activities, delicious food trucks, market stalls, all day stage entertainment, and showground rides.

What a great weekend, well done team!
