Boomers Claim Triple Crown In Tough Battle With Spirit
The Deakin Melbourne Boomers have claimed the 2018 Triple Crown against Bendigo Spirit in an epic three-game battle across four days in Gippsland, Victoria.
The event, proudly supported by Latrobe Valley Authority, Baw Baw Shire Council, Latrobe City Council and Wellington Shire Council, featured games between the Boomers in Spirit in Traralgon, Maffra and Warragul.
The Boomers won two games, while the Spirit claimed victory in one.
Both teams were missing some star players, the Boomers without Jenna O’Hea, Ezi Magbegor, Cayla George and Steph Talbot, who are all on national duty with the Opals preparing for the World Cup.
Bendigo was without Jamie Scott (Team Canada, World Cup) and Nadeen Payne (injured).
“It was an excellent event that managed to connect strongly with the Gippsland community,” said Boomers GM, Justin Nelson.
“The players were quite amazing, their ability to excite young fans and engage with them is always a great privilege to watch. There are many businesses out there looking for outstanding role models to partner with and I can assure you they would be well advised to look at WNBL players,” added Nelson.
Sold out crowds in Maffra and Warragul were features of the Triple Crown, while between the two teams no less than 10 schools received visits by players. A number of basketball clinics for domestic and squad players were also a highlight.
“Everyone at the Boomers would like to pass on our thanks to Bendigo Spirit for their support of the event, the Bendigo players participated in all activities and were excellent to work alongside,” said Nelson, adding, “We also want to acknowledge the everyone at Latrobe Valley Authority, our friends at the local councils, the local basketball associations and Crown Coaches, our proud tour partner.”
