40th Anniversary Honourees – Bernie Dodd
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Deakin Melbourne Boomers, individuals who have made special contributions to the Boomers and our history will be honoured at each Home Game at the Boom Box.
For our Home Game this Saturday January 13, Bernie Dodd is the esteemed guest whose history and success with the team will be celebrated.
Bernie joined the current ownership group which saved the Boomers in 2016 and joined the Board of Directors. Initially Bernie managed the club’s finances and in 2021 stepped into the role of Executive Director and Head of Finance and Administration of the business.
She is very much the fire that burns inside the Front Office team and her consistent support aids the Boomers’ athletes and staff.
Fellow Boomers’ Director Julia Walsh said Dodd “is the glue in the organization” and adds that any gaps that need to be filled, “Bernie always jumps in” to fix them.
In addition to her management roles, Bernie has also been instrumental in building the Boomers Mamma Ball program that runs at State Basketball Centre and Parkville.
Bernie also manages the Melbourne Boomers’ merchandising, creating new designs and ensuring the merchandise stand on Game Days is run effectively.
In 2021, Bernie was awarded the Melbourne Boomers Linda Perry award for her huge ongoing contributions to the club. The Linda Perry Award is awarded to the person who best embodies the spirit of the Boomers, just as its namesake did.
Bernie was extremely honoured to be a part of the 40th anniversary tributes for the Deakin Melbourne Boomers and has this to say: “It’s really hard to stand beside the other recipients of this award, but I don’t need to equal their truly amazing accomplishments and elite performances. My place here is to show that you can be part of something great if you give that of yourself. Turn up, elevate others and you can join their journey.
As part of the ownership group of the Melbourne Boomers I’ve been very fortunate to also work directly in the business. Initially I undertook the basic accounting functions of the business, 8 years on I’m working as a part of the administrative team who get this all to happen…what a fun job!”
